Gift To Be Simple
‘Tis the gift be simple,
‘tis the gift to be free.
‘Tis the gift to come down
where we ought to be,
and when we find ourselves
in the place just right,
“Twill be in the valley
of love and delight.”
When true simplicity is gained,
to bow and to bend
we shan’t be ashamed.
To turn, turn will be our delight,
‘till by turning, turning
we come 'round right.
When true simplicity is gained,
to bow and to bend
we shan’t be ashamed.
To turn, turn will be our delight,
‘till by turning, turning
we come 'round right.
In this techno, sound byte world in which most of us live, this simple hymn and melody are a welcome reminder of a calmer, less complicated time, and more tranquil state of being. Often classified as an anonymous Shaker hymn, it was in actuality, written by the devout Elder Joseph Brackett. It is only one verse repeated (‘Tis the gift be simple, ‘tis the gift to be free. ‘Tis the gift to come down where we ought to be, and when we find ourselves in the place just right, “Twill be in the valley of love and delight.” When true simplicity is gained, to bow and to bend we shan’t be ashamed. To turn, turn will be our delight, ‘till by turning, turning we come out right.) By the simple act of humbly bowing before our God to ask that we see only truth in our lives, even if it is through our weaknesses, we become free of all that can shame us. Then to every turning of our thoughts back to God, we are made “right” in how we lovingly serve others. Simple and profound! – Marie Osmond |
